Stage 1: Application
Candidates must complete an online application form and respond to four questions. AFA’s Resume Builder Course ensures candidates craft a professional, concise application, while the Application Readiness Course helps confirm eligibility and prepare required documentation.
Stage 2: Online Assessment
Candidates complete aptitude tests covering communication, problem-solving, mechanical reasoning, and decision-making. AFA’s Cognitive Aptitude Course provides targeted practice in these areas, equipping candidates with strategies to excel in this critical stage.
Stage 3: PAT 1 (Shuttle Run)
This stage assesses cardiovascular fitness through a progressive shuttle run, requiring candidates to reach level 9.6. The Beep Test/Shuttle Run Course trains candidates to build endurance and improve pacing to confidently pass this test.
Stage 4: Group Exercise
In-person assessments test teamwork and communication. The Group Interview Course develops the collaborative and problem-solving skills necessary to excel in group exercises and stand out as a team player.
Stage 5: Psychometric Test
Personality evaluations assess how candidates align with firefighter values and expectations. The Psychometric Personality Course helps candidates understand these tests and respond with confidence and clarity.
Stage 6: Driver History and Tattoos
Candidates must provide details of traffic infringements and tattoos. The Application Readiness Course ensures candidates prepare and submit all documentation accurately, meeting SAMFS requirements.
Stage 7: Interviews
Interactive interviews allow candidates to showcase their suitability for the firefighter role. AFA’s Panel Interview Course prepares candidates with impactful, and structured responses aligned with SAMFS values.
Stage 8: PAT 2 (Simulated Tasks)
Candidates must complete 11 simulated firefighting tasks within a set timeframe. The PAT Course builds the functional fitness and endurance needed to successfully perform under these challenging conditions.
Post-Employment: Recruit Training
After passing all recruitment stages, candidates transition to firefighter recruit training. AFA’s Recruit Course Prep ensures candidates are mentally and physically ready to thrive in training, while Fortnightly Online Sessions with Firefighters provide mentorship and ongoing guidance from experienced professionals.
